look at the big board
yet another piece from slate: the bush administration is abandoning the tenets of nuclear disarmament as well as the 1970 non-proliferation and 1995 comprehensive test ban treaties in order to return to the development and production of nuclear weapons. because, you know, we don't have enough.
and folks wonder why i tend to lean to the left when it comes to politics. full of green pea-ness
dirk deppey links to a site which fills my heart with glee: the 365 days project, dedicated to posting one obscure mp3 file a day for a year. said year is almost complete, so the archives are ripe -- but the site's owner intends to delete the files after the first of the year, so go digging now. particularly for this gem:

columbus, ohio (ap) - police believe they have caught a man known as the "naked photographer," who is accused of sneaking up on women while wearing little more than a baseball cap and photographing their shocked expressions. officers arrested a naked man late wednesday night in an alley behind a supermarket near where a woman reported being confronted. the man was not identified immediately. ### what the ap doesn't report: stephen p. linnen, the man who police say is the "naked photographer," is expected to post a $250,000 bond on a gross sexual imposition charge after appearing in a franklin county court friday morning. linnen, 32, of columbus, was charged with public indecency and assault. he posted bond wednesday but was later arrested again by police in gahanna. he was then charged with felony counts of kidnapping and gross sexual imposition, newschannel 4 reported. linnen is deputy legal counsel for house speaker larry householder. ### heh. heh heh. hahhahahahahahaahahahahahahaha ooops. end of line -- all change

say you want a revolution
matrix revolutions... what does one say? that it had more holes than swiss cheese (um, if an emp weapon is a good thing to have around, wouldn't they keep one inside zion, as a last-ditch measure)? that it ignored what could have been the best, most satisfying plot twist from reloaded and instead made another terminator movie without governor schwarzenegger? that it relegated wonderful actors to background reactions and platitudes while the rest of the movie went off somewhere else? that it abandons the central conceit of the matrix itself? that it provides a very disappointing conclusion to what was once the most promising and inventive mainstream hollywood sci-fi film in years?
yeah, you could say all of those things. but i still liked it. war is over
slate's timothy noah thinks that the right has finally vanquished the left in the great culture war.

you're all fired
lancaster, ohio -- a man dressed as a woman was arrested after he walked into a fairfield county courthouse and sat in a witness chair in a courtroom.
fairfield county sheriff dave phalen said david william kopp (pictured, left), of the lancaster area, allegedly entered the courthouse while dressed as a woman, walked into a second-floor clerk's office and then proceeded upstairs to judge steve jackson's courtroom. kopp was found sitting on the bench in a witness chair, according to deputy jeff marvin. ...deputies took kopp into custody because he entered the courthouse for no lawful reason, phalen said. kopp allegedly tries to enter courtrooms because he says judges are corrupt, newschannel 4's monique ming laven reported. kopp was charged with resisting arrest, failure to comply with a police officer, disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing. in the past, phalen said kopp created a disturbance in the courthouse to the point that jackson issued a court order stating that kopp was not to be on the fourth floor unless a court hearing or appointment was scheduled. ...kopp allegedly resisted arrest. his wig fell off during the ordeal. "he told us that we were all fired," marvin said. "as long as the sheriff says i have a job, i'm going." 11.04.2003
target: audience
as will probably come as no surprise to my friends and family, i like to watch tv. my real problem is that when i watch tv, i watch tv. and so there are oftentimes things that stick out to me that most folks would let slide or otherwise wouldn't take notice of. val is the same, and treats television in the same way i do -- which is how we found ourselves watching the nightly news on sunday night on abc, laughing ourselves silly.
have you ever taken notice just what kind of commercials a given network is running at a given time? take abc's sunday night news, for instance: apparently, it's all ads for laxatives, arthritis medications, viagra, and sleep aids such as adjustable beds. every commercial break was clearly intended for a -- how shall we say -- more mature audience. now, normally we're nbc people -- tom brokaw in the house, y'all -- and so we're treated to ads for mutual funds, cars and fast food. i have no idea what cbs does with it's time, as i tend to avoid that network like the plague. but are we alone in seeing a trend? do more constipated people watch peter jennings than dan rather? on a related note: toys r us is criticized for an ad showing geoffrey the giraffe inhaling helium from a balloon. i probably wouldn't have really paid attention to this story, were it not for one very important detail that val pointed out the other day and that no one else seems to be getting: it's a hot air, not a helium, balloon. whoops. also, back to the abc thing: terry moran just wasn't doing it for me, guys. where's koppel when you need him? 11.01.2003
