• Mistletoe Hunt

Years and years ago, my family had an annual tradition around Christmas: they’d go out and harvest fresh mistletoe from some wild tree out in the middle of nowhere.  (Did you know mistletoe is actually some kind of parasite that grows ON trees, and isn’t itself FROM the tree?  I didn’t.)  We hadn’t done it in a long time — until this year, that is, when they decided that it was time that we got back in the habit of getting back together around the holidays.

So the week before Christmas, we all trooped down to Jackson County — in the first really big snowstorm of the year, mind — and went on a mistletoe hunt.  And went sledding.  And went Christmas caroling.  And drank eggnog and ate cookies and watched football and all the things you do with the ones who are important to you each year.

    Anyway. I made this. Enjoy.

  • Lego Death Star: The Beginning.

We’d been saving this one for a while.  Carl’s been after us for at least two years now about this Lego Death Star.  Ridiculously large and expensive, it’s like the Holy Grail of licensed Lego kits.  I figured his Lego obsession would run its course and that he’d move on to the latest fad… and yet, here we are, two years after he started working Lego kits, and he was dead set on it.

So Val had the idea that we would band together with our parents and my sister and Ronda and PJ, and in the interests both of answering Carl’s prayers and… controlling the amount of birthday detritus we’d be facing, we’d bite the bullet.  Two parties and a ton of birthday gifts later, we wound up with the video above, today.

I figure at 3,800+ pieces, we’ll have lots of time to track his progress as it’s slowly assembled.  More pictures and videos to come.

  • Levitating Goalie is levitating.

Carl, in goal for the Animals during the third period of this morning’s game. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t get this from me. Dad likes to tell the story about how he knew I wasn’t going to be a soccer player when I was younger; seems during one game all the action was at the other end but I wasn’t anywhere to be found, and when he looked he saw me sitting in the other goal, all alone, banging on my shinguards.

    So there’s that.
